[Rewarded Review] MacBook Air: Light and powerful
Andy· Review provided by bestbuy.com · December 1, 2024
Design and Build Quality: The MacBook has a really nice design with durable materials. The aluminum design is solid, premium and looks very elegant. It's very light (2.8 pounds) which is less than I expected.

Performance: The M1 chip seems to be very powerful for pretty much anything even video editing. However, for video editing and more resource intense tasks I'd recommend the Pro model. I love how it never gets hot and it's always quiet. I mainly use it for office tasks and it runs very smoothly. For gaming, I'd recommend a gaming laptop/PC since MacBooks are not built for this purpose.

Battery Life: It has good battery life, it really depends on the usage but I can browse, watch videos, check emails, FaceTime and work on Word or Excel and it can last the full day (about 6-8 hours) with some power left. I rarely use it on battery which could have a negative impact on my battery, but it definitely has good battery life.

Display: There isn't much to add, it's beautiful, text and images appear sharp and the True Tone technology adapts the color to the ambient lighting which is nice. Overall, it's a beautiful display and you will notice it.

Keyboard and trackpad: I love to type on this MacBook, it has the upgraded keyboard which is more reliable and durable than the messy butterfly keyboard from older models. It's comfortable to type in and it's very quiet. The trackpad, like any other Apple product is among the best, I don't think any other laptop comes close to how nice the trackpad is.

Software: It supports the latest OS as of the time of writing this review (Sequoia) and it's compatible with Apple Intelligence which is nice, it doesn't add many features but it's nice to have compatibility. In terms of software support it's still updated by Apple, based on older MacBooks and their lifecycle it should support OS upgrades for at least 2 years, and perhaps 1 or 2 more years after that of security updates, but it's not official until Apple confirms it. This can be important if you're thinking of keeping it for longer than that since many apps drop support for older OS versions after a while. In addition to software support, an important aspect of Mac OS is the compatibility with other Apple devices and how nicely everything integrates. If you don't have any other Apple devices it's still a very powerful laptop that can be used as just that, a laptop, but being in the Apple ecosystem I can notice the advantages of the OS integration with my iPhone, iPad and AirPods.
Almost got exactly what I wanted.

Getting Macs refurbished is a bit like Russian Roulette...you can luck into some really good items, but then you can end up with some really crappy ones. I have had both experiences, so I was not sure what to expect. There was a quality rating image on the product description page that showed the condition as "excellent," and between that ant the price, caused me to take a leap of faith on this one.

I received the MacBook Air and have been using it for almost a week and I am very satisfied with it for the most part. It came in excellent condition as stated. The box it came in protected it well, and it had very light signs of use on it. I cleaned it up a little and it looks almost brand new. It was important to me to get a 2020 MacBook Air because that one can be updated to the latest release of MacOS as opposed to previous versions which can only go up to Sonoma. I was able to upgrade this MacBook Air with no issues.

It works great! I was most worried about the battery, as most refurbished MacBooks have worn-down or bad batteries, but this laptop has a battery reported as normal by MacOS. It holds a charge for a very long time and I can use it on the battery with no issues. It also comes with a new condition USB-C charger that works fine. For the price, this was a really good deal...except for one issue.

The listing states that this is a MacBook with 256GB of storage space, which is great, and part of the reason that I got this particular laptop. But when it arrived, I found out it was only 128GB of storage. That is not awful, as all of my most important apps fit on the hard drive and I keep my documents in the cloud so I save space. Still, that is only 1/2 of the advertised capacity.

Weighing everything, given the fact the laptop was fine everywhere else, I decided to see if I could reach out and get a partial refund to compensate me for the fact that I did not get the advertised storage. I did not want to have to go through the full refund process only to have to reorder a different laptop and potentially get one that had more storage but more issues, too. Walmart informed me that they could not do a partial refund, only a full refund and then I would need to reorder the laptop on my end. They did offer a discount if I went that route, but I did not want to send the one I had back.

I reached out to the seller directly and have not heard anything back from them yet. Because the laptop I got is so good otherwise, I can work around the incorrect storage issue, but for another user that may have been a dealbreaker. So the shipping was fast, the laptop looks and runs great, but the incorrect storage detracts from my rating. Still, I cannot say the experience was a bad one this time around.
[Rewarded Review] Love it, despite a couple minor occasional hiccups

I ordered this MacBook for writing my reviews and I'm thrilled with it! It syncs with my iPad Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max and my iPad mini BEAUTIFULLY! It seamlessly connects between devices making it effortless to toggle between my devices depending on my needs. I can write at home or on the go and pick up exactly where I left off on any device.

The MacBook is portable enough to fit all of my backpacks yet, it's light enough to not add too much weight. It's easy to find affordable, protective and stylish cases or sleeves for traveling with my MacBook while providing the peace of mind that my MacBook is safe during travel. The fingerprint security offers the ultimate security for protection of my MacBook/icloud account.

The screen is vibrant with excellent imagery. Streaming is a breeze whether I'm watching something or just listening to music. The multi tasking capability is better than my iPad Pro. The mouse pad and gestures are incredible!! It's so easy to toggle between my notes and webpages for efficient and thorough reviews or to just toggle between apps and functionalities. The interface is smooth no matter what I'm using my MacBook for. I really don't notice a difference in my M1 chip and operating system as opposed to my Husband's M2 chip MacBook. Memory has never been as issue with the 8GB memory and 256GB SSD. My MacBook is rarely ever laggy or non responsive. It never overheats and works beautifully for my daily use and needs. It connects smoothly (via Bluetooth) with my razor cobra mouse and my Logitech mechanical keyboard when I'm stationed in front of my MacBook for working and writing. I haven't noticed any bluetooth connectivity issues between my devices and my MacBook. Battery life is superb. I literally have my MacBook on like all day long and charge it roughly every 3 days or so. (Even after year of ownership) Maybe every other day if I'm using my MacBook for a solid 12 hours for 2 days. The two USB C port are great for both quick charging and my acer USB C 7 in 1 hub. (which provides a convenient display port hub for my monitor out SD ports for my SD cards)

The only negative experience I've had with my MacBook in the year that I've owned it is that it has randomly disconnected from wifi. It happened a few times when I first bought my MacBook. Although it took a matter of seconds to simply reconnect to my wifi it was still annoying to deal with. We recently switched internet providers and since then the issue has not reoccured.

Additionally in the year I've owned my MacBook it did freeze on me like 3 separate times (randomly and months apart) where I had to do a hard reset for my MacBook to get it smoothly functioning again. Once I did my hard reset the MacBook functions beautifully and smooth with no indication of other concerning issues.

The other thing I did notice is that occasion some apps will freeze and simply show a spinning mouse icon. I specifically notice this with the notes app. Force closing the frozen app resets it and gets it smoothly operating again.

I would assume that the hard reset I had to do for my MacBook as well as the froze notes app is a result of literally always having my MacBook on and never really turning it off. When I'm done for the day I usually just close my MacBook and open it back up to pick up where I left off the day before. 9/10 times that's not an issue and the MacBook functions smooth and beautifully. The most common issue is my notes app freezing. I usually see this issue about once a month or maybe even once every 6 weeks or so. It's not so recurrent that it drives me crazy but, it is something I have noticed.

Despite the minor hiccups I've occasionally experienced I'm loving my MacBook. For my daily use it performs beautifully! It's smooth and seamlessly connects with all my other apple devices. It's easy to use and extremely portable. It's a million times better than the previous Dell and HP models I've used/owned in the past. I would whole heartedly recommend this MacBook to anyone looking for a work horse MacBook that holds up to long hour daily use.
[Rewarded Review] I would've bought the MacBook Pro instead

If I could do it over again I would've bought the MacBook Pro.

I've done many things with this computer: Video editing via Adobe Premiere Pro & Rush as well as After Effects, Picture Editing via Lightroom & Photoshop, Audio Editing via Adobe Audition, and Design via Illustrator. And yes with the 8GB version!!!!

One thing I will say is that if you are searching the web, streaming videos, utilizing less stressful apps on your computer such as Word & Excel, you're gonna be fine. For that this computer will last you until Apple's last possible firmware update for this series of processors.

Macs have the ability to glean the same performance whether or not they are plugged into battery, and that's why they control the marketshare of mobile devices.

But if you are using this computer as a workstation to edit videos/audio/design graphics/code, etc on a professional or even semi professional level, then this computer is not for you.

First off, 8GB is NOT enough.

Your constant memory swap between the 8GB of Ram and SSD while using intensive apps will degrade your computer's performance overtime. My MacBook Air scores roughly 15% less than identical systems of its kind in Cinebench R23 due to this fact.

Which brings us to the SSD. It's just too small.

Mac OS + System Data takes up 65 GB of space as it is. That doesn't leave you much for applications, some of which are 5GB and beyond. Again if you're not a heavy user and only intend on utilizing this for school work, then no big deal.

A person at the professional level should utilize no less than 32 GB of Ram ESPECIALLY when using After Effects as it is a very ram-intensive program.

GPU is trash. Once again it can handle YouTube videos and online streams, but rendering graphics via Adobe Premiere & After Effects is a NIGHTMARE. Used to be fast, but nowadays I'll wait 5+ minutes for ONE essential graphic to render in my timeline.

Their proprietary measurement of 7-Core-this 8-Core-that is extremely frustrating. How am I supposed to know what the hell that means?

If you're not trying to break the bank but you're a creator, don't get a Mac. You can't afford it homie. Get a PC instead, or shell out the extra dough to upgrade to a Maxed out M2/M3 Pro.

Remember, BUY ONCE CRY ONCE. For Liberty Bibberty. For Democracy.
